A Quiet New Year’s Eve: Experiencing Presence as the Calendar Turns

December 31st, 2025, 11:58 p.m.

The last few moments of the year.
I was in my room, the lights off, intending to sleep through the New Year, just as I had for the past few years. But for some reason, I couldn’t.

I peered through the window. The road was empty. Darkness enveloped everything. There was no one, no cars, which was a blessing, as I live in a particularly quiet neighbourhood.

Then, the fireworks started.

There were only sounds I could hear; my view was blocked. I tried peering through the other window. To no avail. I decided to stay put and experience the fireworks through sound alone. A peculiar choice, perhaps, but I was used to experiencing the richness of sound through my sound-healing practice. This was simply a different kind of sound, more uplifting, signaling a new year. Or more precisely, signaling our beloved Mother Earth completing one full orbit around the sun.

I stayed where I was.

A few moments passed, and little by little, I noticed a serendipitous feeling arise. It felt surreal to be witnessing and experiencing a shift in calendar years. Never mind that it wasn’t a fancy New Year’s Eve celebration; just the quiet arrival of an awaited moment was enough. Like anticipating the chime of a grandfather clock, there was something gently magical about it.

Some say time is relative. Spiritual teachers say time doesn’t exist at all. I’ll spare us a lifetime debate. What I do know is that I felt soothed and deeply grateful for such a small yet precious experience.

This isn’t the first time I’ve encountered a direct experience of what I call Portals of Presence, but I remain humbled every time I do.

Happy New Year to all you beautiful souls.
Let’s meet again in the next post.
